Staff are requesting time off work; what can I do?

Employees can take leave for many reasons, including to go on a holiday, because they are sick, or to take care of sick family members.

Your service will already have policies and procedures in place that employees and management follow when it comes to applying for and approving leave. It is important that these processes are followed, and employees and employers are aware of their obligations when accessing leave.

The needs of the business should always be considered before approving an application for leave such as annual leave, long service leave or leave without pay.

Education and Care services are regulated on staffing qualifications and numbers and this needs to be maintained as part of the service’s regulatory requirements.
