Our service is still operating, how are employees paid if they are unable to come to work due to a natural disaster?

If your service is operating and the employee is unable to reach the service, you are not obliged to pay the employee for the day unless they are on approved leave.

Under some circumstances the employees may be entitled to personal/carer’s leave. These are:

  • if the employee is unfit for work because of their own illness or injury, or
  • if the employee needs to provide care or support to a member of their family or household who is ill or injured or experiencing an unexpected emergency.

If the natural disaster has resulted in a life threatening injury to, or death of, a member of the employee’s immediate family or household, the employee will have an entitlement to 2 days compassionate leave.

For more information on how to approach pays for staff who are unable to attend work due to a natural disaster, contact the Member Infoline on 1800 991 602 (Press 2).
